Default Extension housing or sye?

I got a 1996 Jeep Xj with a np231 transfer case. I just recently put a 3" lift on and the drive shaft is slipping out of the shaft due to the fact I have the stock slip yoke. So my question is do I have to get an sye or can I just use a rear extension housing and get a seal to slip the yoke right in? It seems like it would be the same as an sye just kind of extending instead of shortening. Any inputs would be great!

That's a new one. Never heard of that at 3"s.

Yeah I was hoping I could get away with a 3", but guess not. I can feel it when I put it in drive it hesitates to slip in. Would the extension work or just go with an sye?

You might be able to use a longer driveshaft. What axle and transmission do you have?

A driveshaft from an AW4 D35 combo will be about 1" longer. AX15 manual trans will be another 2" longer. They need to be from 96+, older ones will be different again.

Also make sure the new shaft won't bottom out in the transfer case when rear end compresses or you'll be buying a new transfer case and/or rear pinion

Unless your driveshaft literally falls out and hits the ground than that's not your problem.

Well the drive shaft is one problem of many I have now lol, but whenever I'm going faster than 35 mph or so and let off the gas it sounds like a grinding noise from under the drivers side area. Also happens to when I accelerate right after I let off. I inspected everything under there and no sign of anything damaged.

Typical symptom of driveline vibes. Fixed by correcting your driveline angles. SYE + new driveshaft + shims at axle is best option. Temporary is a tcase drop and/or shims at the axle.

Search driveline vibes after loft.

Yeah I was thinking it had something to do with an sye and vibes. Thanks everyone for y'alls inputs, guess I'll go with the tcase drop for now.

Vibes are more likely to be coming from the front

Pull the front driveshaft out and see if they go away
