Default ethanol gas?

Me and my friend were talking the other day because my jeep was acting stupid not wanting to run and stalling and we figured I might have bought a bad fuel pump cause I just replaced it like a month or so ago anyway, he brought up how now there's ethanol in gas and back in 98 and so on and forth these vehicles weren't built to run with ethanol so could he have a point? Could the reason our older cars don't really want to run anymore is because they're not equipped to run with ethanol? Just a question, I'm a girl so I don't really know about cars and ethanol or any of that.

I'll try to answer this the best I can. Most of today's gas has ethanol in it to bring the octane levels up. Ethanol has been in most gas since the 70s when it was introduced. on your issue you probably did get a bad pump. Now if you put e85 in your tank then I could see some problems like worse gas mileage and less power and you would have issues with your fuel lines and pump and injectors as e85 will eat through almost anything and requires speacial lines, pump.
