I always recommend at least a 9500 pound winch for an xj, just to play it safe....whats your budget? You can get a winch from $300 all the way up to over a thousand. A lot of people here say they have had good experience with the 12000 pound winch from harbor freight for $300...i have a rough country 9500 pound that I got for a steal that hasn't let me down yet. Honestly just check out the reviews on one that fits your budget and you should be ok.

I Have a RC9500...so far, so good, but it hasn't been used much...the Harbor Freight Badlands versions are hit and miss in a lot of peoples opinions, but that said, we used them on our work trucks, and they were pretty good, and used daily for years, so take that for what it's worth...some lasted longer than others, but pretty good for being used daily.
In my humble opinion, get a Smittybilt 9.5k, around $300...look into getting him a recovery kit as well, it will have things like gloves, ****** block, tree strap, most all of the needed things for recovery in one bag.
