So I've heard that Eaton is suppose to broadening the Posi line up to include Dana axles?? I sure would like to stick one in my 35! Hell even the 30!! Anybody else heard about this and maybe know *when* this would be happening? I was about to buy a Dana Trac-Loc for my 35 but I'd hold off if this was happening somewhat soon. I've thought going with a Detroit Locker but not sure if wanna deal with a Locker in this particular XJ, still see a lot of street time. Anybody running a TrueTrac? I've thought about getting one of those but haven't ever run one, I do like that I can match the front with one. Not sure if I wanna spring the extra 80 bucks considering the Trac-Loc also comes with carrier bearings.

 

You'll be much, much happier with lockers....MUCH Happier.

 

I've run Detroit Lockers before, I've got some experience with everything I mentioned except the Detroit TrueTrac. Just not sure if I want Locker in this XJ... It's also about 200 bucks more might go with it who knows

 

Swap that 35 out for a 8.25 before you even pull the diff cover off

 

Honestly I've never had much problem with a Dana 35. I'm not sticking anything bigger than 31s on it, the Dana 35 should hold up fine. My old XJ had a 4 1/2" lift with 33s and a loose pinion bearing, it put up with my abuse for years in that shape roaring away on the highway and going anywhere offroad I pointed it before it finally busted a few teeth off the ring gear leaving my driveway. The one in my dads YJ is doing just fine with 33s and a Trac-Loc... granted neither of us wheel like maniacs I'm not trying to argue the Dana 35 is the best, far from it. But I don't think it's as weak as everyone wants to make out. The 8.25 swap seems like a lot of effort for not much gain considering I've seen them torn up and bent also.

 

I know few people who broke their Dana 35 on stock tires.....

 

All I'm saying is IMO I don't think it's worth dumping that much money into a d35. Might as well spend a little bit more and get a lot more out of it.

 

I helped my friend swap his broke eight and a quarter at the gas station where it broke, bone stock at the time. If I was gonna go through the hassle of swapping I'd source a Dana 44. From my experience the Chrysler 8.25 doesn't offer much, if any advantage over a Dana 35. Slightly bigger ring gear and 2 more splines, that didn't seem to do much for my buddies XJ. Busted some teeth off the ring gear and the pinion both plus broke the left axle shaft at the splines... Just curious what are y'all running inside of whatever axle you've got? You like it?

Least I'm not a smartass wasting time swapping axles that aren't any better like you. Can't you read? I said I wasn't arguing it's the best. Just not worth swapping for the ol mighty eight and a whole quarter of an inch.

 

No offense to anybody else on this thread either. Just in my opinion the Chrysler 8.25 vs the Dana 35 is either or, which ever happens to be in the Jeep is one to run. ALSO Comparing axles isn't what this thread was for...

I was waiting for a poke at the name lol. I just don't see how a broke Chrysler 8.25 is any better than a broke Dana 35. I've seen just about equal numbers of both torn up with that 8.25 I had to help swap at a gas station being about the worst, guess the 4 or 5 broke ones I've seen were faulty huh? A fluke? My experience tells me that either is just as likely to break as the other. But I'm done with this thread, y'all can say what you want. I just wanted to know about what traction adders people might be running that I haven't.

The early model 27-spline C8.25s are the same strength as a D35... the later model 29-spline are not.

Get a lunchbox locker and a 29-spline C8.25 if you want to save some bucks...
