Default DOM vs ERW

So basically I've been pondering the idea of building an interior cage and DOM was what I first decided on using then I was searching around and obviously erw is much cheaper. I've read a few threads on here and everyone bashes on people using anything other than DOM like HREW. Clearly Chrome-moly would be the best but wouldn't ERW be just fine? I don't plan on slamming into barriers at the race track (but who knows)! lol

Have put roll cages in my cars for over 35 years there is only one question you need to ask yourself.

if you are entering a sanctioned event, you need dom. not painted.

if you just want it for what we do, ERW is fine, cold or hot.

dom is just ERW that's drawn over a mandrel to smooth out the seam.

I would HREW its cheaper and most of time after you roll you need to re do some of the cage anyways.Unless your gonna do something like king of hammers i would use DOM then.

That's what I'm going to use lol. Everytime someone says they're using something other than DOM on here they get bashed. I was just looking for that reason. I've found some good prices and even though rew dents easier it's going to be internal so if I flop hard enough to dent something badly internal I think I have bigger problems. The way I see it, if it's structurally sturdy such as triangulation, etc, I see no problems. If something bad happens to a section I'll just cut it out and replace it from the original weld spots.

Also, I'm not entering any events. I just want to protect my body in case of a flop or light tumble

yeah if you're going full internal might as well use HREW since if you flop the cab will be destroyed anyway. 1 time use
I'm going hybrid and plan on flopping so DOM it is

It's going to hug the **** out of the pillars. I might do an engine exo to keep everything from being destroyed. Obviously dom for that. I don't care if the body doesn't look pretty, I just don't want it smashed up so bad that I can't stick a new windshield in. The rear hatch windows are going to plexi and for the A pillars I might actually use DOM and tie all of that into the engine exo. Actually I guess you could call it a hybrid lol. First things first though, internal.

In all seriousness, HREW vs D.O.M only matters where sanctioning bodies decree that you must construct a cage out of a specific material. Other than that the design, gusseting and triangulation are the areas you should focus on. If it doesn't mount securely to "frame"...it ain't gonna do much protecting.

That's pretty much what I though lol. I've done plenty of research on the matter and the only negatives I've really found where people on here complaining lol

What about chromoly tubing. It's just as strong as Dom and weigh a lot less. Anyone tell me that if it's possible?.

Have you looked at the cost of chrome moly tubing?
