I'm a jeep guy through and through have have just as much fun wheeling as the next guy. I've been spending alot of time on the build threads trying to get some ideas for some mods, and notice more and more guys taking perfectly good xjs and through mod after mod turning them into some kind of dune buggy/ rock crawler hybrid that is hardly recognizable. Now let me say- I love rock crawlers BUT if you're going to do a rock crawler- start with a piece of junk/rust bucket and build it. Don't take a perfectly good jeep and chop it to 1,000 pieces. I love my jeep cherokees and know that it is only a matter of time before we don't see them on the road anymore, and at the rate of these jeep murders it seems like that time is approaching quicker than desirable.

but the 4.0's still hold up great. sounds like a perfect starting point for a buggy to me
I'd rather see that than someone scrap it or crash it

i am in the rust belt area and my xj floors was pretty rusted out i put in all new stainless steel floor ( keep rust off) . i built my jeep from stock and i aboslutely love modding my jeep and wheeling it. it is my daily driver and a weekend wheeler. i wouldnt ever chop the top on mine that is one mod i wouldnt do.
they are cheap and plentiful. and most people who build them and actually wheel them are the final owners anyway. if you were to build an intense xj would you sell what you already have and find a rotted pile? if a rust free xj was the same price as a falling apart xj would you settle for the falling apart one and let someone else buy the nice one?

And I guess people can do whatever the crap they want with these things...

I kind of have those feelings too.. but I don't think that it will be anytime soon that xj's become "rare." Besides, it's good to see them taken care of. It's much more painful to help my buddy pour 5w-20 Supertech Conventional into his rusted out 93 2-door with a broken transfer case. How that thing has 275k trouble-free miles on it, is a mystery to me.

Why would I want to start with a rusted out hunk of crap. Mine was bone stock and hardly had a scratch when I bought it and I knew I planned on wheeling it before I even found it. Mine isn't chopped but it's beat to the point it doesn't have a straight body panel, not even the hood or roof, but I like the fact that it's still fairly nice inside, if I cleaned it out, and it runs good. Kinda hard to mount to a rusted out unitbody, notice I didn't say frame, only thing I hate about my heep.

Most people on here are not master fabricators. So if you were to start out with a peice of junk, it takes a lot more work and skill to turn it into something respectable. Everyone has there own taste and has the right to do whatever they like to their rig. Some people like a clean stock looking rig, some people think the less body panels the better! Me personally, I like it when the fenders and quarters are chopped, if its done right and not with tin shears! Haha. I'm sure there are people that have looked at your cherokee and thought it was hideous. Just my .02
