Think it would look weird with a little gloss over it for more protection?

The pains I used have special hardeners in them so they don't require a top coat. The second two were painted using krylon camp paint with fusion technology....oooohhhhh... I painted mine with aervoe brand military paint. Its the same stuff the military uses and its made locally in northern Nevada. Because its military grade /used it meets federal standards for color, shine and abuse.

They are both solid once they harden. The krylon takes 7 days to setup while the aervoe takes 3. Both have been abused but remain flexible. I've given mine some desert pinstripes and dented other spots without paint peel/chips.

There is no wrong in camo. Just use the right colors and it will come out good. The best thing you can do is prep the hell out of it first. I made 2 - 3 passes with each grit and used a ton sanding disks and sponge blocks.

I went OCD on mine when it came to colors and scheme, the wrangler didn't have a set pattern when I started so I improvised. Step back every few minutes and see whats developing, if you don't like the way a certain spot looks hit it with more paint til you do. The wrangler went through 3 pattern changes before I finalized it. That other XJ went through 2-1/2.

Desert camo:
