Have a 98 XJ with a filthy engine.

Any suggestions on what to use / how to degrease an engine?

It’s really easy.

Gunk brand engine degreaser, and a manual car wash. Just follow the directions on the can.

Only use low pressure water to rinse off the Gunk or CRC engine cleaner.

Can follow with CRC electronic parts cleaner so you don't damage any electricals or plastics.

This is good advice, however I never abided by that rule and just went HAM with the pressure washer and gunk. No known problems.

I should mention I’m a bit obsessive and I do this one every month or two.

Hunk brand and 99 percent of the others don’t be a dang thing even with a pressure washer !! Trust me when I tell you this go buy some “bleacher-white”. They sell it at dollar general and wal mart I believe . It will take it ALL off but beware it is STRONGGGG don’t get it on your paint if possible .

This has worked well for me, with one caveat. I put a plastic bag or sheet over the distributor and the alternator, and either cover any main fuse box or at least be aware of it when rinsing. Those high pressure washes can easily push water inside electrical things and lead to gremlins. But with those simple precautions, I agree the Gunk is hard to beat. Works best when the engine is warm but not very hot.
