dana 44 blah blah
having some search troubles. just wanna know which of the two rear D44's I should throw in my rear end (god willing I find one)
both have disk brakes yeah?

that info was last edited in 2008
fairly positive the second one is the stonger of the two. just want one that's easy to find and will fit properly
are these the only d44's with disk brakes out there?
edit: also someone mentioned something about welding c-clips on an 8.8 so they wont break? what? that doesnt sound accurate..
or does someone have a link to a thread with all this info already posted

ok I was just on 4wheelparts and detroit only makes an auto locker for 30 spline d44 from pre 2000. I think
plans for 4.56 d44 detroit auto (231 aw4)
so that means I need to find a d44 from what model what year again? any of them have disk brakes? having trouble searching..

Why dont you just use any normal 44 and put disks on it? Seems like finding a rubi rear or something with disks is a waste of money, I know most of those dont sell cheap.

I thought they were harder to find
and also because I havent seen any conversion kits for less than $400 yet and I havent looked if theres a way to do it cheaper by piecing it together yet
can I pull a good 5x4.5 d44 from anything other than an xj or wagoneer?

TJs and early XJs are the only ones with the 5x4.5 bolt pattern and both are over priced. If you don't plan on running anything over 35s get a 97 and up 8.25 and call it done. If you want disc get some off a ZJ, the will bolt right on with a small mod. Wagoneers, unless you mean the XJ version, have a 6 lug bolt pattern.

Nope all 8.25s are c-clipped but the disc brakes will hold the shaft in if you break one long enough to get it off the trail. Another option is the ford 9". Car and early bronco versions are close to stock width and can be had with any bolt pattern and several spline counts with aftermarket shafts. Stock ones would be 28 spline and either 5x4.5 or 5x5.5.

Disc brakes will not hold the axles in if you break a C-clip. The caliper bolts are not up to the task of holding an axle in place because of the leverage.

On my old D35 running 35s mine held for almost 3 hours while I rode out to my trailer. This is on rocks, hill climbs and mud. I wouldn't drive with a broke shaft on the street but you don't usually break on the street.

well it looks like the 8.25 is out then. I'd rather just go with the 8.8 then
and I'm not worried about the axle walking out on me
I was worried about the fact that you have to disconnect the c-clip in the carrier and I dont want to have to open the pumpkin. ever
does the d44 axle shaft come out without opening the diff?
as in, if I break a shaft on the trail, I want the axle that is easiest to fix
I'm trying to make it so my weak links are axle shafts and u-joints because they are cheapest and easiest yeah?

ok so it sounds like a want a d44. if I have a cclip it's gonna stress me out to the point where I know I'll be afraid to push it to the limits
and thats stupid I want to wheel with confidence
so d44 from an old xj.
I really wanted a disk brake rubi or something. just make it nice and easy on myself
but detroit only makes lockers for 33 and 35 spline and chrome molly is not in the budget
any thoughts? does detroit make a rubi 30 spline locker and I just cant find it?

ok after more research I've got more questions
is it worth it to grab a 95-99 hpd30 so I dont have to worry about vacuum disconnect failure?
then I can just bring both axles in already emptied out to whoever I choose to do installation
edit:: will that make install a little cheaper? will they still be able to put it under load?
that way I can build and install them at my leisure and still DD on the other axles
got my info here http://csloffroad.com/jeepzjxjwjaxleinfo.aspx
also, is the d30 a c clip axle? can I get full circle replacements and weld the inner c's for better strength?
