water pump? could be worn. usually will leak out the weap hole if its worn.

do a pressure test on the cooling system and a compression test on your engine. could be a cracked head or a head gasket.

You could go to your local jeep dealer to have it done. Here in washington diag runs anywhere from $90-$180, thats at the chevy dealer I used to work at. you also could probably rent the tool to do it from autozone or another autoparts store

check your clutch fan.
should be stiff when hot and easier to spin when cold. just be sure to remove the keys from the ignition before you stick your hand in there.

any auto tech shop should be able to perform this.

i agree with caged, check your fan clutch as well.....im actually going to change mine out now cuz its locked up. isnt causing any issues other that a lot of air noise, and its annoying me. also giving a slight vibration at high rpm's.

turn on your xj and look at your waterpump pulley. If it wabels or sound like it's grinding it's probably that. happened to mine 2 months ago. I don't know how much it costs for an xj cuzz did it virtually free other than my own
Labor but it runs so much better now. Mine wasn't as bad as yours, it just overheated on the trails and on a day that it got up to 95 degrees which is unheard of where I live
