Somebody yell at me if this is the wrong place to post this.

I've been looking forever for a cargo cover for the rear area behind the seats.

Up until now, they've been scarcer than hen's teeth. I've had a saved search running on EBAY for at least the last two years with almost no results at all.

That's changed - There are new ones popping up left and right lately from a bunch of different vendors (I assume they are different vendors)

Prices are all over the place, but I bought one at 120 bucks a couple of days ago.

Apparently only available in Charcoal grey (light grey... yeah, I know.)

 

I want one of these so frigging bad but I don't have a factory spare tire and the pics I have seen all show an "offset" to accommodate for the factory spare

Share pics when you get it mounted!!

 

I keep hoping to find a '96 down parts Jeep with one. Want to see if I can rig it up to fit a '97 up. Would need to be a full size spare one though. Want the cover itself and all the hardware associated with it. '97 up come with a "tarp" cover. Kinda of cheesy but I do have a couple of them.

In the meantime, the supplier sent me a picture of one. Once I get mine and throw it in the back, it will look just like this.



I'm not sure why he didn't straighten out that bend. Easy enough to do.


I hope this one lasts as long as the last one.

BTW, what broke on mine is the plastic mounting clip on the left side. If I can figure out a way to adapt it, it could still be used.

When you say you don't have a factory spare tire, are you saying yours didn't come with one, or it did but it's long gone? For me, that's the best place to carry a spare.

 

I have 33" tires and it won't really fit vertically. I used to get a 31" tire in there at an angle, and some ratchet straps to the factory mounting location but now I just throw a 33" in the back if I am wheeling or rely on AAA if I am on the road.

I assume it wouldn't be too hard to fabricate or reupholster it to be wider and cover the whole cargo area.

Or maybe I can try and mod something for another vehicle into it, get some brackets 3-D printed or something like that. I just want one so I can keep some stuff out of view in the cargo area, even with dark tint you can still easily see in there

Tough to tell for sure. The parts catalog, see the attachment and click on it to make it bigger, lists different part numbers for RHD and LHD. Thing is I think the tire would still be on the drivers side of a RHD model. See the second shot. Even though that has an factory tire carrier the layout in the back, see where the inset is, looks the same. Also do you have the brackets, what I circled in the picture, to mount the cargo cover?

 

Yeah, the bracketry is going to be the clincher... and the Amazon page doesn't mention anything about it being included.

 

Doubt it does. I am hoping to find a '96 down someday in the boneyard to steal all that from. Plus the supports behind the plastic. Chances are the cargo cover itself will be long gone if I ever do find one but then maybe I can buy the Amazon cargo cover like you are condiserding.

 

Slightly off topic, but my XJ came with a cargo cover.
The thing always got in the way when hauling large items. So i removed it. Besides all the rear windows are factory tinted.

I think i might of thrown it away years ago as i haven't seen it laying around anywhere.

Gonna take a look around and if i find it, its free just pay the postage.
By the way it is (or maybe was..lol) gray.

 

For the amount of time that it would actually be used a cheap roll up window blind could work. lol

 

That's the same one. Search for them on EBAY; you can find them for at least 20 bucks less. (I got mine for 123)

I'll let you know if it comes with hardware as soon as mine arrives. To be honest, I'd be surprised if it did.

 

I still have my factory one with brackets. It always got in the way but did cut down on road noise. I guess it would conceal valuables ok.

I got the one I ordered today. No hardware, just the cover.

And yes, it is for a right side mounted conventional tire. Mine is the left side mounted "Polyspare" tire. (The thin one)

These replacement covers are all over the place, and they all offering the same cover.

Actually, the only thing broke on mine is the left plastic mount that holds the cover axle. I was even going to go as far as take the one off of the new cover and stick it on mine, but that baby ain't coming off.

Anybody know how to 3D print parts? lol
