Cherokee vs Xterra - whatchoo think?
not all Xterras are created equal.

titan swapped fully armored battle wagon. 300hp. 2000Watts of lighting. 34's, 10" front travel. 14" rear travel. IFS. yes its $$$ but it's also super unique

FWIW, I had an XJ and LOVED it! great trucks!
I plan on getting another really soon as my dedicated trail rig.
X's are just plain damn tough trucks....but then again so was my XJ...
hope to see you guys on the trials. Cheers!

P.S. I'm locked, have a bulletproof drivetrain, and just ordered 35's ....so yes you can do it....but it will cost you a hell of a lot more than an XJ similary equipped....

You may remember it looking more like this though.

I think I pulled you out once?

I or should I say my wife has a 2006 X-Terra. I like it, she likes it. We have not had it off road because, well, it's heres and she won't let me. It is a very capable truck on road and in the bad weather we have had it out in. However, I'm about 6' 2" and have to really duck to get in, the doors are just too small with that roof line. I set very high in a comfortable seat but it won't adjust down enough. Also, like most foriegn trucks I've been in, they think we Americans are all short legged long armed or something. In short I like the X-Terra alot but it just don't fit me. Wife is 5' and loves it. It has a good amount of room for her and carries others ok in the back, but not me.
Now having said all the above bear in mind I have no XJ yet, I did have an FJ-40 Land crusier, that got me started and a full size Blazer with 4" lift and 3/4 ton axles for a total lift of about 5.5" on 35" tires. Talk about RRRROOOOMM. Now I mostly drive a Ram pickup and I hope when I find an XJ it will be roomy enough for me.

Um, actually I wasn't trying to say X's are better than Heeps. To the contrary, look at the photo I just posted today (page 7 of this thread I believe). It shows an Xterra with a "Jeep Rescue Unit" sticker on the back of it getting winched out by a Wrangler.
I figured you guys would get a kick out of it. Look again....

Drove my Sis' about 400 feet and wow...not alot of room for me to get in the drivers seat. And everything seemed backwards. Sounded bad as well.
I like the old pathfinders vs the xterras. I actually almost bought one instead of a cherokee because they look sweet, had less miles than the cherokees and was cheaper. This was 5+ years ago though. I've known people with xterras and it seems like they were always having problems and they were in the shop alot. Now, I am glad I went with the cherokee vs the pathfinder because parts are plentiful, cheap and you can't really beat a solid front axle when it comes to lifting higher than 3 inches.

I like the Xterra and considered it. But it came down to the classic square body, cost, availability of parts and ease of repair. I also like that people take a "cheap" vehicle and turn it into something special. We've all seen it with Vespas, Cushmans, Yamaha 650 twins, etc. They develop a real cult following because of some undefinable characteristic that I don't personally feel with the Xterra or even other 4wd's have.
The Cherokee works as the best example of a cheap bit of classic machinery that I can afford to own, know how to fix and drive every day anywhere. It's not unlike some of the farm trucks I drove as a kid. In a decade they'll all be beat to crap and the remaining ones will be to expensive to own and hipsters will drive them, like beetles and 70's road bikes converted to single speeds. At that point I may be forced into a Wrangler ; )
