After some research, test driving one today and your guy's responses, I think I'm gonna stick with my xj. The Wrangler did not feel stable at all, it was very noisy, way smaller than expected, huge blindspots, and was not comfortable at all compared to my xj. The xj really is cheaper in every aspect as well. Thanks for all the responses. Much appreciated.
If you want real comfort in a Jeep go with a WJ my 04 "Overland" with full time 4wd is the best 4x4 I have ever driven on snow and ice in over 50 yrs. of driving for a DD. That said you have the best year for an XJ made now and so have I a 99 Sport.
I would not trade my XJ for ANY new 4x4 for off road use and end up having at least $50-60k in one to beat on, just foolish IMHO but money wise its your call. I do think that I would keep your XJ and buy something else if you must but you may find that it wasn't what you really wanted. At least you will have the XJ still in case of a mistake.
I really like both of my Jeeps and the WJ has every option offered by Jeep that year, something you might consider if its a DD and not a toy.

Right on man. They are good rigs and with a little knowledge and persistence become capable quick.

Eh, I'm really not a fan of the wj. The only Jeeps I really like are the xj's and the mj's though I do have a soft spot for the new Renegades.
I would second looking for an LJ, to me they seem perfect except for their price.
I was actually considering that but to my knowledge there are none for sale around here. After I test drove a Wrangler today my desires for anything Wrangler just diminished. Xj's ftw, now I want a 2 door xj.
well, my wife drives hers all winter 2 hours each way to work up here in northern ontario.
like i said, it's not bad if you keep in mind you're driving a jeep.
also, if there's snow on the road, use 4hi. just remember to throw it back into 2wd on clear sections.
you will be shifting in and out of 4hi on the fly many times, but this way it will keep you straight.

When I test drove the Wrangler I couldn't believe how stiff and unstable it was. I can't imagine driving it in winter.
honestly ive always wanted a tj, i love them, but not enough to override my inner cheapskate.
i bought an xj in the first place because it was cheep. 2500$ for my red one bone stock vs 8k$+ for a near stock tj with a 4 cyl/5 speed (im a 4.0L/auto guy) ive got under 8k in my xj so far and its near fully built.
but on the other hand if i had the money, i would totaly build a tj, 5.3/4l60e/np231/d44's/35's but the xj will get all that instead
Only way id own a wrangler is if i bought a frame and tub and built a rock crawler out of it.To me the best daily driver jeeps are the zj and wj both have coil springs front and back so they ride really smooth.I think of them more of a luxury 4x4 that is worth a damn off road.

The ZJ is pretty freaking awesome off road bone stock, add a lift, beefier rear axle, and lockers it will be almost unstoppable.
I've seen some pretty cool lifted & rigged out Libertys (Liberties, Libertii?) popping up lately, last week there were two lifted rigs that were doorless in the parking lot at the JY. I've always kinda hated on the KJs simply because they replaced the Cherokee, but these looked really sharp.
Not much to get mad at here... save for the poser rubi decals.
Engine: Golen 4.6 Stroker, AFE Headers, 62mm TB, 24 LB Injectors, Brown Dog kit, HF Cat, 3" Exhaust

My sister has had two lifted liberties. They do alright. Look kinda cool
I have a TJ and an XJ. I DD the XJ to save wear and tear on my TJ. Road manners for the two are pretty much the same. My XJ is stock and the TJ is stock sitting on 31's. The tj drives as nice as the XJ at highway speeds. Both jeeps are unstoppable snow machines; if you drive cautiously in the winter the TJ will do just fine. I wouldn't hesitate to drive mine all winter if it wasn't for all the salt they use on the roads here in MN. If I could only have one of my jeeps, I would sell both XJ's and keep only the TJ because it is more enjoyable to drive. Sounds like you really want a TJ, just go for it before you end up with larger debts, wife, kids, and so on!
