Impossible. If the BMW is indeed 6 months old the road side assistance would be there way before you could consider them "stranded". Also did you stop and ask each one of them what the problem was, followed by them replying "I dont know". After which you diagnosed their BMW to conclude it was a faulty fuel pump?

Quite possible in fact it's true. The direct injection engines from BMW had massive problems with their high pressure fuel pumps, a simple google search will clarify that for you.

Despite being "BMW roadside assistance" they don't magically appear when your Beemer breaks, they need to be called and dispatched and then drive to you.

This also was 1 person not multiple people and eventually BMW was forced to buy back the vehicle under the ma lemon law due to the amount of time it was out of service. I did not diagnose any of the vehicle problems, that was all done by certified BMW mechanics at the BMW dealership.

I don't see why you say this is impossible.

Because you said you have seen 3 BMWs stranded with that problem. Which would mean that either 3 people you know baught a brand new beemer and had the fuel pump fail within 6 months (hard to believe) or that you met 3 people on the side of the road with a broken down 6 month old beemer that knew it was a fuel pump that was broken (hard to believe). I didnt know you were talking about one car.

My buddy paid $1600 for some **** box 01 Cherokee w/ 180k on the clock, rusted out floor boards and broken window buttons. He drove it ~1000 miles each way from Wisconsin to CO this summer on a whim after doing some incredibly basic maintenance (I think just an oil change). It is still firing on all 6 cylinders.

Been on plenty of long trips with my 00 with a 3" lift and 31" tires. Drove great the whole way... not that great on gas, but it was a comfortable ride.

Understood. Getting back on topic I did drive my previous Xj from Illinois to Tennesse and back hauling a trailer with a motorcycle without a glitch. I wouldnt drive the one I have now. So another example of how it depends more on the Jeep you have, maintenance and its shape.

Four trips to and from Missouri 1,893mi one way, this after 300k and my maintenance isn't by standard up to snuff. A small toolbox with tools to do basic repair is suggested though.
In the end do YOU trust your JEEP?

My XJ has 270k+ and its lifted on 33s. Made a 550 mile round trip down state 6 months back no problems. Moved 1100 miles out to North Dakota a couple months ago, 11 hrs a day driving for two days in a row, no issues. I was prepared for the worst though, with a full set of tools and a AAA subscription. I love my Jeep, though the highway ride sin't that great.

Here are some other things to check for peace of mind.
For example, you might want to replace the serpentine belt.

Service items

  • Cooling system: Radiator, cap, water pump, thermostat, all hoses, Fan clutch
  • Flush cooling system
  • Replace distributor, plugs, wires, coil.
  • Clean Throttle body
  • Battery
  • Battery Cables
  • New brakes/rotors.
  • New front and rear wipers
  • Serpentine belt
  • Air filter
  • O2 sensor
  • Valve Cover Gasket (leak) and 2 PCV valves
  • Oil filter adapter (leak)
  • 4 new shocks
  • Tranny mounts
  • Motor mounts
  • Seal rust (floorpans, doors, rockers, etc)

Things to inspect
  • Replace tires?
  • Replace Clockspring? (airbag light, no horn, no cruise control)
  • Any burnt out bulbs?
  • Check exhaust (muffler and catalytic converter)
  • Cracked Exhaust Manifold?
  • Any cracked vacuum lines?
  • Secure rattling 4WD shifter?
  • Driver’s door check pin and bracket (popping door?)
  • Fix all windows (motor, bypass lock switch)?
  • Flush clogged radiator core?
  • Hood Release Cable?
  • Replace Rear Liftgate Struts?
  • Replace worn suspension (Front Lower Steering Stabilizer, Front SwayBar Bushings and End Links)
  • Replace worn U-joints
  • Replace worn Wheel bearings
  • Squeaky steeering wheel? Lube Steering Column Boot (from inside)

Optional service items before they die on you
  • Alternator
  • CPS/CKP sensor
  • Replace TPS (throttle position sensor)
  • Replace IAC/ICV (idle control valve/motor)
  • Starter
  • Fuel pump and filter

Optional upgrades

  • New Headlights
  • Transmission cooler
  • Replace center console
  • Replace carpet

What can you add to the inspection checklist?

^ Post above me if a little bit out of control. I drove my 00 Cherokee from PA to WY about 14 hours a day for 3 days. Non stop except for gas and sleep and it did fine. Currently I have an oil leak from the oil filter adapter and my jeep is kind of beat up from a summer of hard offroading and I just drove from WY to the oregon coast. All up and down the pacific. And back to Wy with no issues. If I was you, I would, change oil and tranny fluid. Check coolant. Check brake fluid. Feel your belts for signs of wear. Take a look at your tires. And hit the damn road!!! Never travel without a good sleeping bag and lighter.

Sounds like a dream list for maintenance on my jeep. HAHA. If I replaced all of that I would be broke. But the Jeep would be feeling damn great wouldnt it. Well. You definatly put a little thought into that list. Thats for sure.
