Who has experiences with the 2.5L VM Engine?
I have bought a 1995 Jeep XJ 2.5TD for 950 Euros
The Turbo was broken, I completely disassembled the engine and put in new journal bearings, new piston rings. Cleaned the whole engine. After 350.000 kms I could not see any severe wear on the pistons, liners, looked quite OK!
I was able to buy from a 0km 2.5TD Scorpio engine (1996) the turbocharger, but the guy had also the cylinder heads, camshaft, complete valve train, so I bought the whole package.
After building up the engine I drove the first kilometers but noticed a heavy ticking noise, probably from a stucking hydraulic lifter. I added 2 x Wynns valve lifter cleaner but nothing helped. The valve lifters were also from the Scorpio...new! I checked the rocker arm-lash with engine off. I could not determine any lash between rocker arm and valve. So the check valves in the lifters seem all to close.
I am now thinking that maybe there are some differences between the Valve train components from the '95 Jeep and the '96 Scorpio. Shorter push rods which cause clearance? Could the ticking come from another source? Diesel pump?
Who can give me some hints? I hate to take the heads off for cleaning the lifters? Maybe it are not the lifters?
Any help will be appreciated!
