I took my 1998 jeep cherokee se into a mechanic the air blows but its just not cold. and he wanted to charge me 30$ just to look at it and more cash to install whatever it was on top of it i said no thank you. Ill buy the kit at walmart for like 25$ and do it myself and he told me i can ruin my car by putting the wrong pressures in and ill blow a gasket and oil will shoot out is this true? How do i make my a/c blow cold again? What do i need? Can i do it myself? I have minimal mechanical experience

 

Without the proper equipment, there really isnt much you can do on your own. Not to mention the legality issues if you were to release refrigerant into the air. I strongly recommend you stay away from the walmart "fix it kit". There are many very sensitive components in the ac system. Those ac pro kits have leak stop in them. Over time it can cause clogs in the system, causing a larger repair bill in the future. Id recommend taking it to a shop.

 

If your ac compressor still kicks on, its likely that you just need to recharge your Freon. Go up to auto zone or o reilleys and talk to someone there about what you need. often times, they will help you charge your system. It really is not that difficult.
