Originally I had been looking for an XJ but searching the classifieds its way cheaper to buy a ZJ. What in particular should i look for? i know on cherokees the 8.25 is what to look for. I'm looking for the 4.0 but anything else in particular? i would probably do a mild lift (31s 3")

 

You'll only have the choice of a D35 rear axle with the 4.0. Look for one with the NP231 transfercase, you will be much happier with that. Just make sure everything works and take it for a long test drive before laying down any cash. I have a 95 ZJ and I love it, it wheels pretty darn good right out of the box! The 96-98 ZJs had some nice upgrades for comfort over the 93-95 model years. Don't worry about all of the electrical problems everybody says the ZJ has, it has no more problems than an XJ does.

 

with regards to the transfer case how can i tell the difference? is it with a certain trim level?

 

get under it and look on a red tag on the transfer case. there will be some numbers on it.
