Well, Scarlett finally gave up the ghost. Been having heat troubles. Flushed her out and put in a new thermostat. Tooling down the road when I hear the dreaded knock. Pull her over and she's smoking. Turn key to on to look at gauge again, and now it is pegged, not at 200 or so, where it was 2 min ago. So long Scarlett, been a great 7 months.
Doesn't mean it's blown! The knocking was probably pinging because it was so hot. Was the smoke out of the exhaust or under the hood? If you're really really lucky it might not have even blown the head gasket.

Use it on your transfercase drop.
Well there is always time to learn how to rebuild a motor.
I'm keeping the long block out of my parts jeep, so I have a good running motor to swap into my jeep, when I yank the motor out of it to rebuild it, somewhere down the road. Just because I replaced everythin else, so why not lol

Smoke was coming from under the valve cover gasket. And it's a '98. If it's not blown, why did it overheat? Unemployed right now so a stroker is def out of question. Would like to put in a diesel and run it on veg oil! No gas station again, just eat lots of Mexican, Chinese and Doughboys (fry bread for those out west) Realistically, never rebuilt, never put one in. Do have a friend who used to work at a Jeep yard who may be able to get me a used one cheap. We'll see. Just sucks at X-mas.
