I saw a picture somewhere of a red xj that had the fenders and below the door line painted black, can't remember if it was bedliner or just paint.,and I want to do the same to my red xj.
Will the spray on duplicolor bedliner work for this, if I sand and prime before. Or would herculiner be better ?

even used it in the bed of my current jeep to replace carpet.
i wouldn't recommend spray on unless your going line-x but thats expensive.
but now i deff wish i has heard of the product monstaliner
its very similar to herculiner and other spray on bed liners but its better last longer and is easier to clean..
heres some pictures of a couple of the jeeps ive done this to.

I'd go with the roll on stuff, too. I have to do my fenders soon as well. I was looking into a spray, but was convinced to sand, prime, and roll the bedliner on.

spray on just makes a mess.
roll on is SOO much easier to control, and you dont get runny lines even if your horrible at painting.

I just did mine with the Rustoleum bed-liner in a can. It took me 4 cans to do all rockers, fenders, front/rear bumper, grille, headlight bezels, some of the rear 1/4 panels, and some other trunk pieces. It's really simple, just mask everything off and it's real easy. You don't have to be a master painter, it ends up drying VERY evenly... so if you get a run, just dab it off (I used an old under-shirt). I haven't had much time to test the durability of this stuff... but this Jeep is a second car anyways, so I'm not too concerned if it doesnt look perfect in 4 years.
Home depot and lowes both carry it...
I should also mention that I did basically ZERO prep work besides washing the thing. There was some rust that I scraped with a wire brush before I sprayed, but I just sprayed over it. It looks fine, and if it flakes off it'll be easy to touch up. Again... Not too concerned with the appearance of the body on this thing

having sprayed bedliners professionally i would advise going with the spray can option as you will have more control over texture and its easier to keep the texture consistent. i did my rockers/lower doors and flare with the duplicolor liner and its held up good to a point where i have bashed my flares against trees and it hasnt flaked.
Instructions
1. Tape and paper the parts you dont want painted, i was able to slightly bend my flares away from the fender and get my tape just behind em, then used the body line on the door as my guide, if your able to get the flares off without breaking the mounting bolts this is a better option but i snapped three of the bolts so just decided to leave em on.
2. Once your taped use news paper to cover above the tape, i found the height of a typical newspaper covered high enough that i didnt get any overspray above it
3. Lightly sand, fix any rust and wipe down with cleaner, prime over bare metal if you sand it down to that point
4. Lay down your first coat, then wait a bit, then a second and repeat, i found three coats was plenty
5. Remove tape and paper, do this before the liner starts to harden or else its going to be a ***** to get a sharp line.....i used wire tape on my doors so it wasnt an issue if your using standard blue autobody tape it can be an issue, if your lucky your local parts place may be able to get wire tape but not sure as i grabbed mine from work.
I would post pics but being black on black its not too noticeable.
Good luck

i guess it all comes down to strength and longevity desired.
you can do spray on and itll look good for awhile if you did it right.
sometimes even a couple years.
but if you thrash your jeep, spray on ( unless its line-x ) will scratch and chip away. IMO
roll ons give you a much thicker coating, and if you get monstaliner and do it right it shouldnt fade much at all.
no offense to zimdogg. but i bet with the minimal paint prep he did, and the minimal amount of coating. i could probly scratch the paint off with my finger nail. and if not that some tree branches while wheeling will fersure, with the herculiner bedliner when it was on it was hard to get off with a razor when i came back to clean up my lines.
just saying. ive used duplicolor spray on and herculiner roll on.
i go with a roll on for my sides anyday. and on my current jeep when the funds come i will be buying a gallon of monstaliner roll on

A local shop uses Liner X-treeme and it looks just as good as Line-X to me.

You can buy it directly from the manufacturer and you can choose between a couple different formulas.
If you are doing the exterior you want the 100% polyurethane because it has the best UV resistance so the color doesn’t fade.
It turned out way better than any roll-on stuff that I have seen and you get twice as much of the material compared to the higher grade kits that they sell at pain supply houses.
I was going to go with Al’s Liner until I found this stuff… $150 for 1gal of Al’s compared to $159 for 3 gal of Liner X-treeme.
I’m getting ready to spray my rig with it and I’ll get some pics up when it’s done.
