Base trim vs sport?
I need help figuring out whether sport is worth it or not. I found a cherokee on Craigslist with sport trim with 40k less miles but $500 more than the base trim cherokee I was looking at
I really want the sport because of the low miles and keyless entry (I know it's not that hard to install) but it is going to cost me $500 more and I just don't know if its worth it

40k miles is well worth $500 more. Talk the person down another $250 and call it good!
As for actual differences it's very little. Depending on the year Sports came with body colored grills and fender flares, slightly nicer cloth seats, and full gauges. Base trims came standard with dummy gauges, a black grill and black fender flares. Other than that, it was all optional stuff that could be added to either trim level.

Update: the sport with 40k less miles is off Craigslist. So now I wanna know does it really make a difference having a sport? Does anyone have a base model?

No its doesnt matter, Like said above all the options can be added. My uncle drives a 94 base model, only difference between his and mine besides mines all 97+ is I have power everything and he doesnt. All that matters is, engine, tranny, tcase, and axels. I prefer the AW4, NP231, D30/8.25 combo, some will defend there D35's and ax15's

The 94 is manual everything and the only difference is trim.
The 99 has electric everything and different trim.
I wouldn't let sport vs base change anything.
The base may be better if you don't care about having auto everything.

There are times I wish I had a base model as compared to a sport to be honest. Manual locks/windows/mirrors means less electrical components that can go wrong, easier door-less mod, and easy repairs if something does go bad in the door (like a window crank). Body trim pieces can always be painted and a dummy gauge cluster is pretty easy to swap out for the full gauge cluster. If you can get that base model do it.

Really the only option I wanted was 4wd, mine has that. I'm happy with basic mechanical parts, easy to fix, cheaper to replace.

My XJ is the only SE I've ever seen with cruise control so I lucked out there. Only thing I miss is the strip of carpet at the bottom of the door trim, wished I had that but no big deal.
Don't have the sound bar but I've upgraded my stereo so much that I don't care and sound bars suck anyway. Glad I don't have the rear defroster cause all that does is bubble up the window tint.
Glad I don't have the leather wrapped steering wheel cause the leather just flakes off after 20 years or so anyway. Same with the leather seats.
Glad I don't have the upgraded cloth seats cause the one piece seat/headrest is a cleaner look. Glad my grill is black instead of the same color as the body cause that looks stupid except on the 97+.
No need to pay for upgraded wheels cause everyone puts after market ones on anyway, so actually the SE is the best one to have, although everyone with the sport model will disagree.

Basically, the SE really is a great XJ to get. Like 95 Cherokee said, stuff can be swapped out for cheap, so nothing there is a big deal.
