I know, I know. Not an XJ question. My father has a YJ, I've got an XJ. He wants to put an auto in his YJ, doesn't want to go with the 3 speed auto that came in the YJs. Would rather go with something that has overdrive. We pulled some measurements tonight and it looks like the AX-15 currently in the YJ and the AW4 in my 90 XJ are the same length. Looks straight forward enough to bolt in the AW4. The earlier XJs had a stand alone TCU, can't imagine it would be too difficult to hook that up.

Anyone have any experience with this swap? Cant find too much information on the inter webs on this swap.

 

Aw4 are longer than ax15; at 25-3/8" long, while the ax15 is 17" long

 

We had his 91 YJ and my 90 XJ side by side pulling measurements. Both transmissions were right around 25" from back of engine to front of transfer case.

 

If your dad actually has the 5 speed AX15 then I can definitely tell you the mount is in a different spot due to the length difference. Trust me. I did the auto to manual swap and found that out.

Also I can tell you that a factory 5 speed XJ doesn't have the jack in the harness for the TCU to plug into so I wouldn't bet on it being there in a YJ that came with an AX15

 

The YJs never came with a AW4. We are already planning on grafting the TCU into the YJ. Not afraid to modify the skid plate for transmission mount, we can build a new skid plate if we have to.
