Default ATK Remanufactured engine or used engine.

97 XJ Country
My engine runs good but has an oil leak, cant pin point the leak might be from the dip stick area, or head gasket.- I've been driving with it for over a year, driven to NC - GA and to NY from GA - basically I use ut as a daily driver. I have to put a couple of quartz of oil every time i fill up. I can buy a used engine with 180k miles for 350 or buy ATK re manufactured engine. I saw the ATK engine on the 4wd mag for $1600.

I want the engine just in case my current engine craps out. I dont want to spend $300-500 dollars to be told it will cost more to fix, just from different experiences i've read.

On top of the oil leak, I have oil coming into the air filter. I changed the PVC valve it still leaks, I changed the valve cover gasket as well. so it looks like theres pressure making this oil leak. Just wondering what yall would do, and if anyone has ever purchased a crate engine?

I dont know much about engines but that sounds like a mess.
engine for 350 is most likely going to need work.
1600 plus installation labor at mechanic rates. I would just find a new host for that cost..
how much did you buy it for?

I was thinking the same thing about the used engine, specially being sold here, not dissin the guy but we beat up our rigs. I've had the Jeep for about 4-5 years I have about 5,000 invested in my whole truck, lift wheels tire work ect. I was thinking about doing the new engine, because I rather buy that than take a risk on another used jeep... I will wait and check CL to see if I can come accroos an engine with less miles from a non modified jeep that has rear end damage. If not maybe the crate engine is the way to go.

for that price you could build a stroker... most oil leaks aren't very hard to fix on these...
