any one brought a Cherokee back from Okinawa?
I am stationed here on Okinawa and I was curious if any one had brought one back, and if so what kind of mods or inspections if any were required? And how much did it cost to get it into the states? The one mod I know of is the speedo from KMH to MPH, other than that not sure. My Cherokee is RHD, and the door sticker is marked for export, but it was built in Toledo Ohio, and has DOT glass in it. If any one has done this before I would greatly appreciate the info. Thank you in advance.

Maybe that'll answer some questions.
First response says that all you have to do is pay shipping.
I feel like shipping an XJ from Japan to here would cost more than the Jeep is worth.

If OP is military stationed on Okinawa, he shouldn't have to pay anything for shipping as the military would do it for him. Unless things have changed since they shipped my personal vehicle back in the mid 80's, other than getting all the correct paperwork in order he should have no problem getting it stateside.

i just shipped my vehicle from hawaii to miami via the military. you have to current reg, insurance, everything in the vehicle that's removable that isn't stock can't be shipped with it. and you don't have to pay for it. only if you are shipping 2 vehicles since the military only covers one, even if you are married

Yes I am military. I have asked the TMO on base and they are pretty unhelpful. One person I talked to said one thing, another told me something else, and the third told me to contact some other agency, that so far doesn't seem to exist. As time goes buy I feel it is less and less of a good idea to bring this XJ back as I keep finding more and more negatives, like hacked up wiring bundles, and this horrible transfer case. Will probably just buy one when I get home.

If the rig does not conform to EPA and safety regulations.. it must be 25 years old for exemption to import.
This is why some model Landcruisers and Land Rovers are now becoming more popular in the states.
