If it has the same connections it will probably work.

I think the early year xjs had a voltage regulator that was external.

I probably answer this about once a month, on six or seven different boards. Please do search...

No, it will not work. 1991-up Jeeps got the Nippondenso alternator, with the regulator circuit in the PCM. 1990-earlier Jeeps typically got the Delco alternator (12SI or CS130,) which were internally regulated. They won't cross.

You may be able to set up a Delco as a "one-wire" job and install it in place of the ND, but you'll get a persistent CEL/MIL and it will mask other faults (the PCM will think the regulator isn't working.)

For the XJ:
1984-1996 was the Delco 12SI
1987-1990 was the Delco CS130 (some rare CS121s were used)
1991-2001 was the Nippondenso.

The Delcos are internally regulated, the Nippondenso is not.

Clear? (Sorry, but I get a little frustrated when I have to answer a question again and again and AGAIN! Nothing personal...)

You can replace the brushes in the Nippondenso...if you can find somebody that sells them.
