Default acetone in your gastank myth or fact

i feel like i may be opening a bit of a debate, but lets keep civil.

anyway, i've religiously added 2 oz acetone to my gas tanks in all the cars i've owned, in order to gain mileage and possible performance increases.

disclaimer: all of these were done in my garage without any fancy tools like dynos or hummdinggers or whatever else, and most of this is my opinion! Do not try any of this because i said so, i am not liable for whatever you get from this!

OK now with that uncomfortable part over, I've put acetone in a jeep wrangler sport, a ford escort lx, a ford zx2, a buddy's cavalier, a toyota celica, a hyundai tiburon, a police impala 9c1, and now 2 jeep cherokee sports. In ALL cases, no problems arose from my use of 2oz per 10 gal fuel. In all cases, i FELT like i got a little more power (probably just my imagination) and in all cases it helped the mileage, but in the smaller cars i listed helped more. For example, the tiburon was getting 30mpg like it was nobody's business. after a few fill-ups of acetone mixture, it was getting 32 regularly.

Anyone else experience or have experience with this sort of thing?

It saves you roughly $1.67/10gallons of fuel (assuming it actually is the reason you got 32 and the gas you put in wasn't different as the formula isn't always exactly the same each time you get it out of the pump, also the weather conditions would have to be the same for your test to be valid, I'm talking barometric pressure, humidity and temperature).

I run acetone 1oz/4gal around here - 2005 Suzuki Verona and 1988XJ 6-242.

On the Verona? No effect noted. On the XJ? Probably gained ~1.5mpg, but that could be due to anything else I've done, finally settling in and working?

However, I do know that acetone is added to gasoline already as a detergent (injector cleaner, mainly,) so I would think the chemistry on this is pretty well known.

However, since all you're doing is increasing the acetone content of the gasoline, and acetone is a fuel in and of itself, and it's good maintenance practise to keep things clean, I see no reason not to have used the stuff anyhow.

About once a quarter - the gains weren't significant enough to measurable enough to be noted and directly attributed, so I quit adding it constantly (my acetone bill was going up!)

mythbusters busted that one...but only as far as mpg gains. cleanliness may be another story.

I work at BP and have investigated this on my own. Mainly for use in the sports car, not the Jeep. Acetone can be used to boost octane levels of the fuel. But, the price and amount required made it not a viable alternative for higher priced fuels. I haven't found anything that says it will increase the amount of energy produced when gasoline is burned, other than it would displace some of the alcohol in the fuel. If your interested in keeping the fuel system clean, look for "Top Tier" certified fuels. These are tested to make sure they meet a certain quality level. BP is not one listed and that is likely because they haven't submitted a sample (or paid money) that would allow them to be a part of the group. Most all major brands of gasoline are "Top Tier" certified.

I've seen these little bottles of acetone here under the "eco-fuel saver" brand. Apparently the idea is improved atomization allowing a more complete burn. Are you guys running this stuff or actual pure acetone? (No idea if this product is 100% acetone, it's way too early to look at MSDSes. I have heard that similar effects can be gained by running ethanol-free Top Tier fuel such as Shell V-Power)

thanks for the info,

and the mythbusters video.

salad - no, not pure acetone. that would cost a fortune!

i've been adding 2 oz per 10 gal to my gas tank, using a double shot glass - so 4 oz total whenever i fill the tank on the jeep.

used the same system with other cars previously owned, i always thought it helped
