Default 96 steering wheel dry

I had a steering wheel cover on my 96 xj since I first got her, and I decided I like the thinner feel of the steering wheel, so I took it off, and was faced with the same problem I was when I bought her, it's dried out and very worn looking. Do you know of any type of conditioner or whatever I could use? I have some leather conditioner we used to use for my sisters wj before she sold it. But do you think that would work, or would it make it too slippery?
