Default 4x4!

Probably sounds silly to most folks on CF, but I put my '89 XJ in 4WD for the first time yesterday. Not just the first time for me, but the first time, ever. The PO (also the original owner) informed me that she had never used it, didn't even know what that extra lever was for.

I was a little reluctant, since she's my DD and I can't afford any major catastrophes but I found myself at the base of an impossibly steep dirt and rock embankment and couldn't resist trying. I'd checked the fluids (diffs, TC, and trans) a couple weeks ago when I changed the engine oil and found them to be nice and clear and at the proper level so what the heck. So, neutral > 4wd high > TC neutral > 4wd low > AW4 1st gear > Go! Go! Go!

She clawed her way up the embankment with virtually zero wheel-spin and before I knew it, I was at the top. I reversed the engage procedure and off I went. Now I'm addicted. Every hill needs to be climbed. Maybe even more than once.

Good to hear! I'm sure you'll be getting chased out of construction areas just like me any day now, or entertaining some construction workers on break!

Hillclimbs are addictive, next you'll discover mudholes.

I did a hillclimb today, it always amazes me. I wouldn't want to walk up some of the hills I've driven up.
