4-Lo and 4-Hi are part-time 4wd. Only use them when there is low traction. If you have an NP 242 Transfer case you will have an option that says "Full-Time 4wd." This is the only All-Conditions 4wd that you could have.

The owners manual explains it in detail. I'm not positive if its universal. For my 99: put it in nuetral to switch to 4 high. Then while in gear and moving approx. 2 mph put it in 4 lo.

not necessarily. Use 4lo on steep descents with loose rock, etc . You'll can save your brakes and have a safer ride or on steep rutted out uphills you'll save yourself from bashing the underside unnecessarily and it'll be kinder to your suspension as well. Full time can be used on the street part time can not. Use part time hi or lo if off pavement in anything other than say a fire road or maybe sand, you have it why not use it. switching from 4 hi to 4 lo is best done stopped, shift your transmission to neutral and then shift the transfer case to lo. lo is good up to about 20 or 25 mph. The WJ owners manual says the preferred method is to shift to neutral and coasting at speeds of 2 to 3 mph shift to 4lo but I find this more difficult trying to obtain those precise speeds.

^What he said.^ Stressing that using 4-lo to creep down hills must be on a fairly loose surface, e.g. not pavement.
