Default 4 speed or 5?

I'm curious. I have a 4 cylinder with a 4 speed manual. Anyone else i've talked has a 5 speed. Does anyone else out there have a 4 speed? Or am i just a little off as usual?

What year is it?

I know that back in the early years the 5 speed was a option and the 4 speed was standard.

But I think that was only in the first 3 years of the XJ..

I have a T-4, which is what you have on my shop floor. 84-5 Jeeps had either as an option.

There were two 4-speeds that appeared in the XJ/MJs. The AX-4 which is the same as an AX-5 just lacking the overdrive. And the T-4 which was a toyota transmission. It was quite a bit more rare

Umm, the T4 and T5 are Borg/Warner tranys. Very American. The T5 was also used in Fords and Chevys. The Toyota tranny was the AW4 auto behind the 4.0L.

So going off what you guys have told me so far. I did a little research. Got under the jeep, and see i have an NP 207 transfer case. And being i have an 85 it would be bolted to an ax-4. I found this about the ax-4... " Note that there is an AX4 transmission in early XJ models, which is essentially the AX5, minus its overdriven fifth gear."

And basically to sum them both up was this. "GM
Because of the transmission's weak service record behind even stock Jeep powerplants, we do not offer any conversion to V6 or V8 power. This is essentially a small car transmission in a truck. The customer's efforts and funds are best spent converting to a stronger transmission during the engine upgrade."

So that kinda sucks... I was just curious on how many others may have had a 4 speed....

Eh im on my way to the u pull it anyway. See if i can find any goodies..

The AX4 and 5 are not strong trannys, but the T5 was offered behind several GM engines up to 160 hp. They are stronger than the AX trannys and in my opinion shift smoother and easier.
