it really depends on how much money you are willing to spend

How much money are you looking to spend? What size tires are you looking to run?
All depends. Just start looking around at vendors.

if you lift 3 inches, you can get away with more minimal mods. but 4 inches is pushing it without doing a few, expensive, things like a SYE, and id imagine a new trac bar, and drag links might be in order. these are all separate costs from the lift its self, which can run ya anywhere from 400-1000... then theres the axles if you go with bigger tires. but if this is a 2wd rig, then idk how crazy you wanna get... mabey just some aal's and a budget boost...

$200 will get you Pucks and AAL in 3 inch. Check Rough Country/Rubicon Express. Just do a "Google" search for "XJ lift kits"...Tj

Well for 200 you wont get much. Here is what I did and overall cost was 150. I think it rides well but a little bit stiff in the rear.

Check out the suspension section.

when i was looking to buy my jeep, it had the classic saggy *** end, and the front shocks were no better... so it had all new, OEM parts put in. then i got a 2"BB from an ebay dealer called "fat bobs garage" (they are a good one to use- alot of good jeep lift stuff) the non-sagging rear and the 2"BB gave me decent clearance. i have no issues running my 235/75r15s. i suppose if i wanted a little more lift some full leafs and longer shocks might do the trick

Rough Country sells a $250 3 inch AAL kit and if you go with 3 inches of lift i would go 30 inch tires at least, 28 will look too small.

you may also want a steering stabilizer if you go with that kit

Don't mean to hijack your thread but since you are already on the topic...

I am looking to lift my '00 XJ 4wd 4-door with an 8.25 rear and I am looking at spending $1200. Right now I have my heart set on a 3" OME lift kit from DPG's but realistically all I want is the 3" lift and 31s just for the looks. I really don't see myself rock crawling but I may take up a trail some day.

So am I going over kill by buying this kit when all I want is the look..., and the ride quality? If the kit isn't over kill then should I opt for the heavy duty or moderate duty leaf springs. I was also considering getting the nitro sports shocks versus the standard OME ones.

On top of all that I need to know what else I would need to be sure I don't run into any issues such as driveline vibrations. Also I wouldn't buy the 31s immediately after putting on the lift and would need to continue riding on my 235x75R15 Duratracs until I scrape enough to buy the new wheels and tires. Would this be alright to do? No foreseeable problems running like this other than the Jeep looking a bit funny with small feet?

Appreciate your replies!
