A few people here have indeed lifted and locked 2WDs and had lots of fun playing. That said, a stock 4WD can do quite a few things you might not expect!
If you're thinking about buying a 2WD XJ that's in good shape, do it. A rust-free unibody is worth the most. There are lot of drive trains you can swap later.

I bought a low mileage police package leak-free 2 door 2wd for $2k with plans to do a 4wd swap.
I have a 99 jeep xj with about 190xxx on it. Its rust free. Im gonna be keeping up with the undercoating, I just want to lift it, but a lot of people just keep telling me to do a 4x4 swap instead...I was hoping to get opinions and pros and cons.
