New personal best. Wisconsin roads, mostly 55-60 mph over 230 miles. Maintenance done, dual electric fans and took off the roof rack cross bars (picked up a 1/2 mpg there). 2001 4.0 with auto.

Last week I got 21.20mpg in my ZJ with a 4.0. All highway and hilly I80 between Sacramento and Vallejo. The best I've ever gotten in the two years I've owned my ZJ. Just turn over 200k on the same trip too.

Just the standard vm diesel engine vehicle came with, dont forget im in England i dont think you had the diesel in states did you.
Mine is a 2-5 engine, still nippy, our fuel price is like £1.38 per litre about $2.15 dont know what your prices are like.
if it wasnt for cost i would go for 4.0 lump anyday.

thats about right for stock and stock flares.
I get that with stock height. 4" b/s soft8's,trimmed fenders, dual wips. I also have the neon injectors, cold air int, walker down pipe, mudfrog 2.5" cat back and magnaflow highflow cat, flowmaster spr 44. royal purple in front/rear diff, transfer case and engine.235 duratracs.
My best is 24.6mpg.the real accomplishment is getting that with a lift and bigger tires.

Yup, 235 tires, no lift (this week anyhow). Has a nifty 70 lb aerodynamic diy tube bumper on the front though. LOL
I always doubted those 20 mpg stories for the automatic, but I guess it is possible under the right conditions. Normal knocking around I get 16-17 mpg. 5-speed folks seem to do a bit better on the mileage.
The family has started calling the XJ "The Flying Brick" because it's spent so much time on the road this summer. The last trip (sixth) trip to boy scout camp in 3 weeks, maybe if I'd draft a semi....
