OK - still looking at buying my first Jeep. These two are for sale in my home town. Limited is a 97, the Orvis is 99. Simialr mileage and condition. Both going for pretty much the same price. Whhich one has a better reputation, what are the differences - and help here would be appreciated

Hi - is the orvis a cherokee xj orvis or the grand cherokee orvis?.. as far as I know the only real difference is in the level of on board toys.. the orvis has the higher spec.. and I think they offered it in some colours that other cherokees werent available in. If its the grand orvis it'll be even comfier inside. Its probably the cherokee xj orvis, cause you mentioned the 2.5td engine, and im pretty sure the grands start with a 3.1td.. because theyre heavier overall.
I have a 1998 xj 2.5td limited.. it has all the toys I need - aircon, electric windows, power mirrors and power locks.. etc. Its got around 178,000 miles on the clock, and it still gets the job done.
Ive found this site (cherokee forum), invaluable for info on lifts, chasis work.. all sorts of mods and advice. I also have a 4.0 I6 petrol cherokee and Ive learned more than I can mention here about that engine ... this is probably one of the friendliest and most helpfull forums online - but you wont find a great deal of info here about the diesels, as they were only really ever distributed in Europe and australia.. heres a link to an australian jeep forum that you might find handy. Cf's def my favourite forum to hang out in, but this one here is a good place for advice on the old oil burners!

Just got off the phone from the dealer regarding the Orvis. They were asking £2100 for it but when they sent it to get prepped decided it needed too much spending on it and have taken it off their books and sent it for auction to be sold "as is"

So that prettty much rules me out - although im keen to get stuck in i need it up and running and reliable for work straight away. The Limited is being sold by a private seller so i'll arange a test drive/viewing

Funny how things often have a way of working themselves out!. I think £2100 was a wee bit steep for the Orvis anyway. I was lucky and got my Limited from a guy I knew well at work - I only paid £800.. the 2.5td's tend to go for between £900 and £1800 depending on their condition, length of MOT etc.. let us know how you get on.
