i wanted it to swing down....im building a work bench on the back side so that i can have a removable vice and somewhere to do trail repairs other than between two rocks as i did before!!! there was no good way to make it tie into the cage at the top without the mount hitting the hatch making it not able to open all the way without it sticking above my cage.....i was right there with you on that one. it seems pretty flippin strong.

i think it was off a tj but i dont know for sure.
i thought if i went around to the cage i would be tripping over the tubes when it was down. and my tire sits alot lower than that

I'm the guy with it bolted through the fiberglass, and it works awesome might I add. I have two plates about 3 x 4 inch, 1/4" thick, they are bolted through the hatch with four bolts, like 3/8" I think, then some LARGE, like 2 inch washers on the back of each. It has two 5/8 pull pins at the top, I used leaf spring bushing at the hatch and at the bumper to take any vibration out of it. Here's a few pics.....
ALso, that is a 35 X 12.50 tire, on a 15x10 steel wheel, with the bead locks. And it still works flawlessly. Been daily driven, jumped, Moab'd, you name it. Anybody on here that's seen it in person or wheeled with me can vouch it works with no issues.

i found a fold down bike rack at the local flea market. $20 and i took it to the shop. got about an hour to work on it and it coming together nicely. gonna hold a 31/10.5/15. pics later.
its not finished but imagine a 1/4" steel plate with four studs off the end of the horizontal piece. of course its gonna be cut shorter but you get the idea. at the bottom where it curves the verticle shaft folds down. a pin holds it up. the very bottom that slides into the receiver will also be cut shorter to bring the hole thing closer to the hatch.
