i was wondering if anyone had suggestions for rust convertors like por-15 .i have some suface rust that was under the 40 year old carpets and factory sound deading material that i want to treat can still hit with hammer
I'm not a fan of POR15. It's much like powercoat, drying into a solid sheet of "plastic". It doesn't adhere very well to anything, requiring rust or a sharp "tooth" to have something to grab ahold of. Part of the process is their Metal Prep, which phosphates the surface, and then you let it rust a bit before applying the POR15, giving it something to grab ahold of.
I'm not saying it's a bad product, I'm just saying that painting over rusted metal is not the best use for it, and as such, there are certainly better products if that's all your doing. Two applications come to mind where POR15 is advantageous; sealing tanks and fixing holes in metal. If you need a solid, "plastic" surface to hold fuel, POR15 is a good for that. If you have holes in the metal panel, and want to embed their fabric in the POR15 to create a solid, fiberglass-like patch, it's good for that.
The proper way to fix rusted metal is to get it down to bare metal and use epoxy primer. This stuff peaked my interest: https://raptorcoatings.com/product/r...xy-primer-kit/ I keep this under the "epoxy primer" option. As they say, "surface rust" on a truck bed, not a patch like you have. Regular ol' body shop epoxy primer is good-enough if you can get it pretty much down to bare metal.
