Quote: U were right about the square tubing. It dose have more ridgetity than pipe. And I was only a half inch off on your bumper. But the bottom line is. That pipe or tube will look.better that square tuning and will be more than strong enough for a 5000 pound jeep. IN MY OPINION.
Pipe is not the same thing as tubing. Thats the difference he was talking about. He used 1.5" Chromoly tubing which is a lot stonger than DOM tubing. Pipe is used for gas and sewage. IMO I would never use pipe or square tubing to make a roll cage. If I were to build a roll cage for my jeep it would be out of either 1.75"x120" D.O.M. or 1.50"x120" Cromoly Tubing.

Quote: I have come into the possession of a beater xj. im thinking about taking the doors off, and chopping it for a summer beater, however i wanna put a roll cage in it, to regain any lost strength in the unibody.

my question is could i use square tubing? i think it would look better and with some sheet metal could be made to look like it is part of the vehicle.
so my question is could it be done or would i have to use DOM?
I would say you could use square tubing to re inforce the body from the inside so long as the tubing is butted up to the body and welded properly. I wouldn't try to use it to build an actual roll cage on the inside.
By the time you got done braceing the corners of the cage to try and make it any where remotely safe you would of been better off spending that time bending and notching tubing.
here are some links to some cheap tools to help with building a cage.

I would hope these hold up for building one cage. And I know for a fact that you would need a longer bar on the bender to bend the tubing.
this is the tube bender you would really want to use. http://www.medfordtools.com/mb3.html
the harbor freight one would/could kink the tube.
