This is an excellent idea and a heck of a lot easier than remounting. Running into deep snow banks can knock out alternators as well, and something like this could really help. Good ideas here.
Edit: Rubber-mounting the bolts on the frame might work as far as allowing for engine movement....maybe some thick rubber washers or something.

The mud guard is a great idea. The mud almost ruined the alternator on my old 88 cherokee years ago. Got to Browns camp getting staged for the days adventures, and my battery was dead. Got it jumped by a buddy and found it wasn't charging at all. A couple blows with a small hammer loosened up the dried mud from the weekend before. I could feel and hear the noticeable drop in rpm's and lights got brighter. Back to 14v. I lucked out big time.

And thx guys, only took a few hours and a few spare bolts (and the heat shield of course) but was defiantly worth it, if only I could find a way to stop the fan from blowing in mud and water everywhere

Great idea but im not worried about splash. I'm trying to avoid submerging. THATS what's always killed mine. At least 2-3 a year. Depending on how often I wanna pretend im in a boat.

Hmm, thinking about improving mine but I don't think u could make a water proof guard for two reasons, can't seal off ur alternator because of the belt, and because it would overheat (maybe?)

on later years the factory postal XJs have the alternator where the AC compressor would be. All factory mounting brackets. you can buy all this stuff online. Not cheap though.
Saw it at the junk yard Once, didnt have the tools to get it. Doh.
