As with a lot of older XJ's, my headliner was a wasted, sagging mess. I wanted to replace it but, as with most things, I couldn't just leave it stock. So after a few design changes, here's what I came up with........Matching door panels and custom grille to follow shortly.

Yes, I hand cut it out of a sheet of 1/4 microcel foam. Then just recovered it in your standard grey headliner material. Total cost......about $55 and 4-5 hours of my time

I'm trying to get a less distorted picture. In these pictures, the webs look all crooked and nasty like I cut them out with a pair of kindergarten safety scissors.

i think it turned out good. is it a pita to remove the headliner? mines starting to sag. and what type of prep and spray glue did you use?

It's rather easy to remove. Maybe 15-20 minutes of work. Remove the dome lights, visors and retainers. Then remove the A-pillar trim on both sides, as well as the rest of the trim along the edges of the head liner. Then remove the rear seat belt bolts. Done.....All you need is a Philips screwdriver, a t-20 torx and a t-55 torx......

Once it's out, remove the old material as well as any remaining foam. I used 3M high temp adhesive, the orange colored one, not the junk Super 77 they sell at most hardware stores.

Could you tell me where you got your headliner cloth?

But they want $60 for the headliner and one can of Dap adhesive, which i've never even heard of.

Luckily, I live near one of the largest foam distributors in the US, The Foam Factory. The believe their site is thefoamfactory.com. The Dap glue sucks. The foam factory also sells 3M brand glues. Get the high temp orange variety.

A full sheet of microcel foam is $28 and the glue is about $14.

The headliner I purchased from Joann fabrics. I bought 2.5 yards at 12.99 a yard.

Did you do your sunvisors too? I hear they kinda suck to do.

I'm getting ready to do mine and I need to do the headliner, visors, roof console and a cargo pocket sub box I'm building and didn't know how much fabric I'd need.

Haven't done the visiors yet but they aren't too bad. Just split them at the seam, remove old material, wrap new material. Then coat the inside with high quality spray adhesive, let set up a few minutes then fold back together and clamp for an hour or so.....done!

I'd say get 4-5 yards to be on the safe side.

Did you use the Super Trim Adhesive P/N 08090

I use 3M Foamfast 74(orange). The Super 77 tends to release after being heat cycled a few times. I've never had the 74 release on me.

I have access to some 3M products so I'll see if my connection can get the Foamfast 74. The 08090 I was asking about said specifically "Aerosol contact adhesive designed for bonding vinyl tops, heavyweight liners and hood silencer pads where high strength and heat resistance are needed." which is why I was asking.

Where did you get the actual cloth upholstery though?
