well i stoved in my rear bumper a few weeks ago and decided it was time.....

first, i DO NOT NEED 3/16 or 1/4 wall tube please don't tell me i do.

second, this is gonna be kinda drawn out over a little while because time is tight but i am doing reciever, swing away tire mount, and tow points..

ok so heres the first set of pics.

cut:

paste:

had the local steel shop punch these out for $10

i don't grind my welds because it ain't worth the time..

looks like a good start
i have to agree you might not need 3/16 or 1/4 unless your doing heavy wheeling
DD/light wheeling theres no need for the extra material after all look what the stock bumper is made from
even if you used something light like stock youve already increased how strong it is by running tube

personally i have to disagree with the grinding part i like a nice clean look
however to each his own and as long as your happy thats all the counts
looks good so far ill be waiting to see it done

First, I love the Pontiac in the background, it's one of my dream cars!

I'm liking how the XJ looks, I've been thinking of something like that for the rear (bottom of rear quarters are rotting).. if only I had the ability to make a bumper like that too. Can't wait to see it all done!

Love me some PBR. If you plan on a swing out carrier you may consider tying into the hitch mounts as well. I've seen the stock ones pull out, after all it's only sheet metal.

i'm assuming you mean the bumper mounts...yeah i'm looking at that,
that cheesy little hitch may become part of the bumper

I was lazy and just used some tube I had laying around and welded gussets from the bumper to my hitch. And I got a PBR sitting on the table next to me.

Looks good; too many are overbuilt; more weight than needed for the intended use

That is exactly the design I am doing on my bumper right now but with a tire carrier on it. How long did it take you to cut the quarter panels and path those up? Were there any problems you came across.

i'm doing my carrier this week...i do restorations and patch repair for a living so it's old hat....not hard just don't bother with trying to fold over the exsisting metal as some guys do just whack all of it and weld in a new piece watch the carpet its close on the inside seam
