look for the xtreme 4x4 episode where they put a lift kit on an orange LJ.. they drilled a small hole in the frame, took a nut welded to a washer, shoved it into the hole, and then welded the washer to the frame.

When the self tapper bolts fell out of my Rustys T Case skid, i drilled two hole's threw the frame rail where the existing ones were, got the 4 1/2" grand 8 bolts and ran them threw the frame rail with a lock washer and a nut on the other side. Has held up good ever since.

The steel is 3/16. And the issue I had with thru bolting, was crushing the box frame. Not a big deal, as all you would have to do is insert some tubing/steel pipe and weld them in place to withstand the clamping force. I thinkt he nut/washer idea is where its at.
