My solution to my broken air conditioner.. Dont laugh too hard

So, I am a big guy, and I hate the heat. It sucks. So, after many weeks of hanging me head out the window begging for a refreshing cool breeze, I made a solution..
My homemade, totally portable air conditioner. Attachment 22471 Attachment 22472 Attachment 22473 Attachment 22474 The fan is pink, only because the box said it was black. But basically a styrofoam cooler with the top modded to hold a fan and an outlet. You take 2 liter and little 24 oz bottles and freeze water in them, and then viola. The air coming out the end is as cool as out air conditioner set on 69*. I have an outlet that plugs into my cig lighter and use it for the fan. VERY CHEAP, VERY BENEFICIAL..until the ice melts lol. |
I love it. Give it a little paint and your god to go.
|
Good*
|
And dont lie about the pink fan. lol
|
haha looks like one of my science projects from high school but if it works thats all thet matters, very ingenuitive.

i dig it man haha

lol!
Nominated to be put on thereifixedit.com |
Right on, I made something like that last summer for my house except I used an old volvo radiator, a 256 ghph fountain pump from HF and a bucket. threw a frame together to hold the radiator up and put a fan behind it. I put a valve at the bottom of the radiator, just cracked open to keep the radiator full of cold water. It'd blow air in the 30's for about a half hour with a block of ice from 711. Everything bought, it cost me $60, well worth it when your not used to 105 degree weather. I really like what you did!! hope you don't mind if I copy you!!
|
If you hook that system up to a NASCAR style "Cool Suit" you'll be even cooler!
|
i give it a

heres an awesome house one. found on thereifixedit.com

Dang. What will people will do for a shot of cold air. :)
Right on to you man. |

But great job on the cooler fan!!! thats awesome and using your noggin!! |
Its simple, yet effective. Very cool idea.
Reminds me of my footballs team water thing. instead of using bottles they have this massive cooler with a garden hose input. goes through a ton of coiled copper tubing and out the other side through a output hose to the "drinking hoses". Fill it up with ice to the brim and bingo freezing cold water. Now what else could that be used for... :drink: |
bwahahahahaa. i LOL'ed
srsly. i might have to do that if my AC goes out here. |
Lol, I just got back from my friends to do a radiator swap and saw all these replies. I am glad people are impressed, and by all means copy the idea. I actually am building a window unit for the house that looks just like a normal a/c window unit.
|
Hahahahaha, I gotta say thats pretty rad!
|
Haha nice! My dad actually showed this UPS guy who came to my house (because he was sweating like no other) how to make one of those. Just by doing the same thing you did... it's a great concept!

Can't bead redneck ingenuity.
I love it. I wonder how much longer dry ice would last compaired to the bottles. |

I love it. I wonder how much longer dry ice would last compaired to the bottles. I actually started experiment with that. Rather than regular ice, the new dry ice concept would be a bit more expensive to make. I am basically using the same fan/cooler/outlet, except the fan pushes the air through a set of tubes running along side coils that are connected to a main box where a chunk of dry ice is tossed in. The box is sealed at the tubes, and the top bolts down over a little rubber gasket so the CO2 doesnt escape and remains pressurized/cold. |
Make sure you take pics. I will watch this one.
|
im seriously just going to try this and see how it goes lol
|
You know, I have seen these for older cars, they made them for 60's model cars, I know my dad has one that came with his 68 RS Camaro.
|
You built a heat exchanger.
|
Stefano, would it really be a heat exchanger, as there is no transfer. He's just coolong the air. Now the one with the coil on the fan would be an example of a heat exchanger.
|
i bet if you made that box out of aluminum so it looks fancy you could get people to buy it for 250-300 bucks labeled as portable ac:D
|
try putting dry ice in there thats what i use to freeze meets at my hunting cabin

when i saw the title i was totally thinking it was gonna be thishttp://www.mopo.ca/uploaded_images/AC-734147.jpg

Awesome, I love it

There is heat transfer, air yields heat to the bottle surface and becomes cooler, one of the two fluids is stationary but it is still a heat exchanger (with very very low exchange efficiency), the air gets colder and the water warmer.

I wouldn't say low low efficiency. I have ran this thing in my room to see how well it does. It will put out a consistant temp of air for about 2-3 hours before the output begins to warm up a little at a time. I am actually pretty impressed by it.
i'm sure it works well. |
i actually saw an older suburban the other day lifted up with a rear bumper with a swing out spare, that had a steel rear window holding a house window unit....strangest thing, they probably dropped at least a couple grand making it look nice and they do that. wish i had snapped a pic.
|
Lol, it's amazing what people do to stay cool. I saw a pic of someone who's window wouldnt fit the a/c in, so they set the outside on plywood, then built a shroud that connected the a/c to the window.
|
1st. Awesome job making a cheap way to stay cool.
2nd. The fan tops it all off. 3rd. If you ever are in a bad spot and need some water, I.E. blown hose or overheated you have some right there. Its almost boyscout approved. I say almost only because you havent put stickers or drawn all over it yet. Rock on. :D |
check this out. 40 bucks. www.kooleraire.com
