Not sure what materials would cost. I work in the engineering department for a plate steel shop. I got all the plate sections cut on the cnc plasma table for free. The 5"x2"x3/16" tube I had lying around from some bumpers I built on an old YJ. I bought 20' of that about 8 years ago for $40. I figure the amount I used on this project was about $5 of that. I need to get some shackle tabs cut this week (free) and then the hoop. I think we may have a pipe bender, in which case I'd make the hoop out of 1-1/2" SCH 40 pipe (free). All in all, it's cost me a few bucks for the additional bolts I'll need at teh frame tie-ins.

My measurements appear to be a little off. I want it to wrap around the corners and end at the stock flare location. I am off a bit on my angle and they don't stick out far enough from the body on the sides. I'll probably get a few small pieces and patch it to get it where I want it. I could slice a bunch of cuts and try to open the radius up a bit, but welding it all back up would suck. I'm about tired of working on it and am looking at the easy way out. In the end, you'll never know to look at it though.

Cool beans brotherman... Look forward to seeing up close soon. Hey, how come you never told me about Ab's Drivein a few blocks from your place? Great fries and onion rings...

im trying to price out the amount of plate i need from the local steel place, not the price but just basic measurements so i dont buy a bunch of unneeded pieces cuz they can get pretty specific on what they give ya and i wont be needing the winch spot just straight across will work for me

I see. I was able to cut everything minus the shackle tabs from a 3/16" plate that was 32" x 50". At $0.50/lb (average going price), that's about $42.50 for the plate steel. Then you'll need the tube steel. You'd have to price that locally. With a bit of effort, you could revise my design to use all plate if you wished. I went with the tube steel because I had it, and I also thought it would stiffen up the front end considerably.

hey man, I'm just real curious... how do you go about bending the plates to make some of those curves? obviously not every crease is welded, so how would i go about that (in an accurate way, since its symmetrical)?

I'm getting some shackle mount tabs cut right now and will hopefully get them on this week. Then I'll bring it in to get sandblasted, then paint. Haven't decided on a color yet. I really dig the monochrome thing, but the white that is on the Jeep now is a combobulation of many different whites to get enough to spray the whole thing. Needless to say, I don't think I can match it enough to make me happy. I'll likely go with a charcoal gray or black, but am open to all suggestions.

Thanks Cory. Just walked out to the shop and picked up the shackle mount tabs and a few misc. stiffener plates. Should have a better update here in a day or two. Any chance you have an oxy/acetylene torch? I need to put this on the Jeep, then heat up a section and tweak it slightly. It pulled on me when I welded it. I had too much gap in one section and all the heat to bridge it pulled it and now it will rub on the bottom of the front fender if I don't tweak it. Once I do that, it's time for paint.
