I've put in 2x6 rockers....Opinions needed
 

Ok, in the process of making my XJ a lot more stout and I've already installed frame stiffeners and the 2x6 rockers, my question is as follows; due to the way my sliders are welded in, they are basically pinched & welded between two pieces of angle iron, do I need to run tube from the sliders to the frame? Personally, I feel like that it is unnecessary as the sliders are unbelievably solid. Thoughts? Opinions? Here is a link to my build so you can see how I've put the angle in and secured the 2x6 to said angle.

Any opinions or input will be heavily weighed & thought out. Like I previously stated, I do not think that they will be needed. I also can see how they could get hung on stuff, which wouldn't be cool. As of now I have it in my mind to not do it but I can be persuaded if a proper case presented. Thanks guys.

If you wheel it, yes. If you drive it to work and the mall, no.

It's strictly for wheeling & hunting, not a DD by any means. Is it a stiffness issue? A strength issue? Just curious, I don't see the 1/4" thick slider bending or anything, but I have lots to learn.

rocks are way more unforgiving than you realize

mine weren't tied into the frame. they started off nice and flat like yours and ended up at a 45* angle. eventually they bent up so high that they sealed my rear door shut. although, mine were only welded on the outside, not the inside

anyway. I learned my lesson. my new sliders will be tied in with 3 or 4 pieces of 1.5x3.5 3/16. they're so easy to make. you can't beat peace of mind

edit: ah totally just realized I didnt take any pics of them. anyway, you can see 1 of them behind this shackle hanger. they sit flush with the frame and go through the floor

Is it necessary that they go through the floor? Cutting up my floor was one thing I was hoping to avoid.

mine are super high clearance. I also cut my doors. I think yours will hang low enough where you shouldn't have to cut the floor

I finished welding in my passenger side slider then put braces from the slider to the frame on the drivers side, going to passenger side tonight. nice. those definitely aren't going anywhere now. bummer about how low they hang though

Thanks! I agree, they are lower than I'd like BUT they are solid and I don't see a whole lot of clearance issues. Also, I didn't see any other way to mount them without cutting into the floor, which I wanted to avoid. I was thinking of getting a sheet of 1/2" or 3/4" HDPE and attaching so they don't get caught on anything. Worth trying or will the HDPE not hold up?

the slider wont "slide" with a ton of tube welded like a step ladder across the bottom

yup. I know. But I don't have junk, rotten rockers anymore and my XJ is stiff as heck. If it becomes a recurring problem I'll just break out the plasma. Thanks for the input tho!

or just attach a skid plate of sorts that goes across the whole thing.. at least then it'll still slide

Those are bad! You using them for air tanks? My next XJ will be like that.

Once I get a compressor, that's the plan. But for right now, they r ready to b ised as air tanks. I got them plumbed to feed air in, under the rear seat, and I got a quick connect in each b pillar. This pic is bfore I put the quick connects on, but got the nipple shown in the pic

Atmos dude...much respect for the job...but those tie-ins...damn. I'd be welding a sheet underneath to make it all flat. I bet it would be pretty heavy after that. lol

A piece of 1/8 might work with a few extra braces to keep it from folding. I have been thinking about doing the same thing for a while now...

Hm? My tie ins? I just finished them yesterday lol. I plan on a piece of UHMW some time in the future.

Cutting into the floor is awesome tho. I only had to cut out a bit it will be easy to cover. Super ultra fancy high clearance

I just cut my old rocker panels out and welded 3/16 6x3 to the rocker sills and it's held up so far. No bracing to the frame.
