i would agree with that, but a rear swing arm is what i do. out of the way. doesnt take up any room. and doesnt add any resistance or weight to the top.

just my spare 32 is just gonna sit in my jeep
i've been building my own racks in the middle tennessee area but have been purchasing surco guttermount brackets to go with them.
i like them alot but would like to be able to offer my own similar design.
instead of welding the gutter mounts on they would be adjustable side to side to accomodate different vehicles just as the surco mounts are.

i'm going to make a tire carrier for a guy that just ordered a rack but here's a shot of my special one-off mount that i made while working at a polyurethane plant.

and as far as the gutter mount strength, i've had 1 stick of 1x2, 2 sticks of 1x1, and a stick of 1/4" flatbar up there with no re percussions,
just yesterday i was using it as a scaffold to chop limbs out of a tree out front.
and i'm 270
it doesn't even seem to flinch.
my only worries are with the mounts themselves as they seem made of rather thin metal.
but the gutters seem very stout.
i've even heard people putting a jeep back on its wheels by pulling on a gutter mounted rack

I don't mean to bring a thread back from the dead, but just thought I would share my home-brew gutter mounts and see what ya'll think. With materials and hardware it cost me under $20 to make 8, 4 for each side. Made from 1/4 inch thick, 1" wide steel. Might not be pretty but they are cheap and sturdy as hell!

Very nice, do the door tops clear the 1/4" steel there? I know it's pretty tight, I had some old aluminum gutter mounts that I tried using but they wouldn't clear the door.

Be warned, when your rig is flexed it might not clear.

Looks like google sketch up. But that's some wicked designing on that program if it is. I have tinkered on that program a couple of times to design a couple of different styles of bumpers for my xj. Great job by the way.

Yes the program is called SketchUp. I have the "pro" version, but its not much different from the free version. You can import other peoples designs, that's how I got the jeep in there.
