Hitch mount tire carrier opnions/ideas?
Hey guys Im wanting to build a tire carrier for my XJ. Dont wanna build a bumper and carrier because of weight so Im thinking about making one to slide into my hitch. I will use 1/4" 2" square tubing for the reciever part and probably the same up to the main mounting and 1/4" plate for the mount for the tire.
Anyone made one? I remember seeing one on JF awhile back but wanted opinions and to see if yall over had done any like it?
I have a spare 16" Moab and am getting 4 free Summit Mud Dawgs in 315/75/16 so Ill have a full size spare. i want it to sit no higher than mid window and Ill have to incorporate a tag moutn and light so any ideas on that are appreciated.
Thanks

I've built one, but from 2"x2"x3/16" tubing and 3/16" plate. See the below link to my local club's site. Pics are hosted on photobucket, so they should load if you click on them.

Also a link to the same build on NAXJA.

Not sure how far you're willing to go... but this is how I did mine and it was dirt cheap. You just have to be willing to drill some holes in your hatch. With a small enough tire I think a stock bumper would support it? Or maybe not, i havent really worked with the factory bumpers. Just throwing another idea out there for you. I have a 35" tire on a 15x10 steel wheel with bead locks on it now. Still no issues.
