Post Custom 3rd Brake Light in a '91

So I was at the junk yard yesterday and a found a '96 cherokee with a third brake light. I own a '91 so it wasnt an option with mine and Ive always wanted one on mine. My tail lights have the black outs on them so during the day its kinda hard to see the brake lights. I had a cop pull me over and inform me that it wasnt illegal to have black outs but I should take them off if I didnt want to get rear ended. I already knew this but didnt want to tell the cop he was a grade "A" genius and get a ticket for mouthing off. LOL!
The install was pretty easy. I had to drill out two holes in the rear panel for the brake light cover to fit over and another hole for the wires to run through. The only hard part was finding the brake light wires I could splice into. I ended up taking the actual brake light bulb out of the tail light housing and splicing into that.
These are just pics of the finished install. I will be posting more pics of the actuall install later on today or tomorrow.

Great tip and a very easy safety upgrade too.

I like it. I have a 91 and was wondering about doing another light in the back and I think Im ganna follow you. lol So you just set it on and screwed it in? Im sure the wiring is not hard at all but what did you use for the screws just right into the fiberglass or did you put anything behind it. I know its just a small light but just wondering.

Nice, was it the pick-n-pull off Federal & 60th? My fav. JY because of their prices.

I picked up a third brake light for my '91. Got stumped on the wiring. Do you have pictures of your install?

Nevermind, I found how you did the wiring portion! Gonna have to trim up the light and drill some holes! Woot

I like it. What about mounting it to the top of the rear window? I wonder if it'd reduce visibility through the rearview.

When I got my tire carrier from the JY, I found one of these on the same Jeep and was about to buy it but quickly realized that it was not going to be visible with the carrier in place so I went a different route. I found the third brake light from a Chevy Astro( which also came on Suburbans and Blazers) and bolted it to the top of my lift gate, worked out great.
