Angle iron flares

4 Attachment(s)
Decided to finally make some room for my tires. I started by trimming the fender following the exactly lines as the stock flares. Grabbed some 2x2 angle iron and welded into place. Tomorrow a 1.5inch piece of flat stock will be butt welded to the out edge at a downward angle to the top piece. Then blend into the lower pieces. Once that's done I'm gonna do sheet metal from the butt weld up to the next body line to give the appearance of a bulged fender. Thoughts so far?

I think right now it looks a little strange, but I can picture what you're describing, and if you get the angles right, it should look pretty badass, I think.

How bad did your fenders warp welding the angle iron?
Definetly looks like an interesting route, I am looking forward to seeing more. Keep up the good work

Didn't warp at all. I used the first bent body line as a weld point for the top piece. Gained some strength there plus it helps preserve the natural lines. I did each piece completely separately and clamped it every 6 inches or so. I tacked about every 4 inches working at different spots to allow time to cool. then went back and burned the pieces in. Hardest part was the lower portion in front of the door where the upper rocker dog legs a bit. For that I just went inch by inch pulling the sheet metal to the angle iron. All said and done no warpage at all.

UPDATE: I got the upper pieces burned in. Hard to tell how much warpage there actually was. I think 7 years of wheeling and abuse they started out warped haha. It's about as much time as I can throw at them for about a week or so. Just had to cover them w/crap paint to prevent rust until I can get back on it with a flap disc and some bondo. I know they aren't perfect but they are mine and I feel they are fairly different than most home brew approaches. Thanks for all the feed back!

More updates: finally got the chance to get back in the flares and purtty them up a bit. I know the color scheme isn't for everyone but it's what I'm known for around these parts.

They look awesome. I would have gone out a little farther if I had any skills with a welder. I like the hard triangle at the back top corner as opposed to the soft rounded corner at the front.
