Looks like a CJ with an a1 windshield frame.

Does it have a tailgate?

yes it has a tail gate... and yes its an m38... the cj5 was built using the m38 as a blueprint.. the tub is just about the same but a few differances 1 being the cowl on the m38 has a big hole in it for the 24v bat the cj5s never had that... I know a bit about jeeps and this is an m38...
even the dif covers are the military heavy duty thick ones. the cj5's were thiner...

I'v never known an a1 to have a tailgate. Are the headlights recessed? Dash has been swapped? Maybe the tub has been swapped..

Is there a serial on the engine above water pump? MD for the 1st two digits would indicate military.

I will have to look at the number on the engine.
yes some later m38s made in canada had a lot of cj parts on them... big problem with it was that they had no room on cj dash for the info plates so they painted them on... well they are all gone...
and yes some had tailgates..
same as a missunderstanding that all m38s had gun mount.. not all did..

walcks4wd.com has a ton of stuff too. That's who we use for our CJ3a. Never been disappointed with anything we've gotten....and we've gotten a LOT, believe me! If something's not on the website, you can call them and ask- they can probably get it. Just a small operation in Pennsylvania but they're awesome!

Nice find... I wish I knew where I could find one in half way decent shape... I would like to get one to swap a 4BT into, and do a few other things among bringing it back to life and repainting it to original scheme...
