Question Performance

I recently had our 1996 Jeep Cherokee(Country) in the shop. The Jeep had been sitting for quite some time. We had the tank drained, the fuel pump and filter replaced. I recently took it out for a ride and it was running fine and had no problem accelerating in the beginning. On my way home I tried to increase speed and it would not go anywhere(I floored it). Anyone have an idea as to what it could be.

Thanks

Could be a variety of issues. So to start, did the transmission downshift when you floored it?

It seems like it did. I was doing 45 mph and when I floored it the speedometer dropped to 25 mph and sounded like the engine was racing.

Almost sounds like the transmission is slipping once warmed up, because you mentioned that it ran fine at first. What does your fluid look like and when is the last time that you changed it?

The system was cleaned out and new fluid was added in December.

I just took Jeep out to pick up my son from school and the Check Engine light came on. Now What?

Did you check what code caused the light?

I brought it back to my mechanic and wound up changing the plugs , wires, distributor and the crankshaft sensor. No more light, but the Jeep still doesn't accelerate correctly. They ran the diagnostics and no codes showed up.
