In my opinion the Baja would do better than a 2WD Cherokee off-road, unless it gets high-centered. But a good driver could overcome that shortcoming before it happened. Witness the Baja 1000.
It has less HP but weighs a whole lot less. And it won't overheat.

I first hand witnessed a baja with long travel break front right spindle on the trail and we ratchet strap compressed left rear shocks to compensate.. long story short, he drove out of wash, up trail, and to highway on 3 wheels right passed the "hummer tours" you pay money to ride on down the same trail.. lol
Id say youre correct on baja vs jeep.
